The Australian Catholic University (ACU) is sponsoring a full-time research PhD scholarship for the LGBTI military history research project 'Serving In Silence?'.
The project seeks to uncover the stories and history of LGBTI members of the Australian Defence Force since 1945. This collaboration is the first of its kind and is being led by DEFGLIS members Dr Noah Riseman (ACU), Dr Shirleene Robinson (Macquarie University) and Dr Graeme Willett (Australian Gay and Lesbian Archives and University of Melbourne).
Members of DEFGLIS and the wider community are encouraged to apply for the position where you will play a large roll in uncovering an exceptionally important facet of LGBTI history within the Australian Military. Applications close on 16 January 2016.

Australian Catholic University, School of Arts, Historical Studies Research Concentration
History at ACU was judged ‘world-class’ in the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) review in 2012. The Historical Studies Research Concentration advances ACU’s reputation for internationally-recognised historical research through its focus on some of the burning issues in Australian and European history. Established in 2013, the Concentration brings together early, mid-career and senior scholars in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Our historians undertake leading edge academic research as well as making significant contributions to important public debates. Our scholars have diverse research interests in social, cultural and political history, but pay special attention to issues of social justice connected to gender, race, class and youth. The Historical Studies Research Concentration is part of ACU’s National School of Arts.
Research scholarship: Serving in Silence? Australian LGBTI Military Service since 1945
There is one full-time PhD scholarship available to undertake research related to the ARC-funded project ‘Serving in Silence? Australian LGBTI Military Service since 1945’. This project aims to investigate how the Australian armed forces have grappled with changing social attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people from the end of World War Two until the present. The project plans to analyse why in some eras the Australian military has been an international leader in facilitating social change, while at other times it has lagged behind civilian norms. It aims to reveal the untold experiences of LGBTI personnel, the processes of change to policies and practices, and their relationship to wider cultural shifts around sexuality and gender. The expected project outcomes will inform current debates about Australian Defence Force culture and wider questions about how institutions respond to social change.
We invite PhD applicants to submit a proposal that falls under the remit of this project, looking at a specifically focused aspect of research. Proposals need to be 2,000 words in length, outlining the specific area of research, aims, methodology, feasibility, timeline and a preliminary survey of sources. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the project leader to discuss ideas before preparing a proposal.
The project team is led by Dr Noah Riseman and also includes Dr Shirleene Robinson of Macquarie University and Dr Graham Willett of the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives and University of Melbourne. The successful candidate will ideally be located in Melbourne, but we are willing to consider exceptional applicants based in Sydney or Canberra.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold an appropriate undergraduate degree with Honours at a minimum level of Second Class Division A (Hons 2A) or equivalent; or a Master’s degree with appropriate research training in a relevant field; or an equivalent qualification.
Value
Australian Postgraduate Award rate ($26,288 per annum in 2016) plus a $5,000 per annum (non-indexed) top-up.
Scholarship-specific criteria
- Academic excellence, including, but not limited to, academic awards or grants.
- Knowledge and research experience in one or more of the following fields: history, Australian studies, gender studies or sexuality studies.
- Prior oral history or archival research experience and publication of research findings are desirable.
- Ability to contribute to a team.
- Management and organisational skills.
- High level verbal and written English proficiency.
