A gay-male Defence couple's remarkable journey to have children is featured in the book "Voices," which was launched today by Patron of Defence Families of Australia Major General Elizabeth Cosson AM CSC.
"Voices: Stories of Defence Families" has been published by Defence Families of Australia (DFA) as part of their Silver Jubilee, celebrating 25 years of representing Defence Families to government and Defence. The stories and unique experience of Defence families along with the realities of military services are reflected in the book. Jubilee celebrations are occurring in all states around Australia over the coming weeks.
DFA spoke to DEFGLIS several months ago seeking the story of an LGBTI family. Stuart O'Brien, Chairperson for DEFGLIS said that the organization was more than happy to participate in this project.
Chris Andrews, a Petty Officer from Western Australia and his partner Paul who are featured in the book said that they felt it was important that other gay couples thinking about having children were aware that they had options.
"Don't be afraid to challenge the norm to achieve your dreams," said Andrews.
