For the second year in a row, Defence has achieved LGBTI employer silver tier status in the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI).

The announcement was made today at the Annual Awards ceremony hosted by Pride in Diversity, founder and sponsor for AWEI.

Ms Melissa Hennessy, Diversity Directorate, and Colonel Helen Macpherson, the Director of the Organisational Development Unit, Defence People Group accepted the recognition on behalf of Defence.

Macpherson said that it was the little projects that combine make the biggest impact.

Unwed Defence families will no longer need to produce truckloads of evidence to prove their relationship exists when a new policy comes into effect on 1st July.

The new Defence Determination (2016/15) aligns requirements for recognition of non-married relationships to those that are used across government agencies such as Centerlink.

Vice-Admiral Ray Griggs, the acting Chief of the Defence Force said that the change reflects the Australian community’s expectations of a modern and inclusive Defence Force.

GENEVA (12 May 2016) – Speaking ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 17 May, a group of United Nations and international human rights experts* call for an urgent end to the pathologization of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) adults and children.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, a group of UN human rights experts, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’  Rights and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe urge Governments worldwide to reform medical classifications and to adopt measures to prevent all forms of forced treatments and procedures on LGBT persons.

New eLearning courses available via the DEFGLIS eLearning portal expands training for peer-supporters and managers of LGBTI personnel for whole of government and provides a certificate upon completion.

The new courseware builds upon the LGBTI peer-support training package that was released last year in 2015 and now includes enhanced awareness packages for sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex people.

The new training package also has a revised version of peer-support training that is applicable for anyone working in the whole of Australian Government.

Australian Defence Force Personnel may be eligible for financial assistance for PrEP, which was approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration last week.

The Theraputic Goods Administration approval for the use of Truvada for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP means that the HIV prevention medication is now available for sale in Australia and is expected to lower the rate of HIV transmission amongst the population.

Mr Phil Joffe, the Chairperson of PrEPaccessNow said that one of the driving forces behind the formation of the organisation was Australian Defence Force members and the belief that PrEP should be available to all Australians.
