LGBTI people in Australia face unjust state-sanctioned discrimination, unacceptable levels of violence, and access barriers for essential services according to a new report released today by Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson.

Resilient Individuals: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex Rights National Consultation Report was officially launched today by Attorney-General Senator the Hon George Brandis who recommends urgent law reform at all levels of government.

At a federal level the report recommends amendment of the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth) to equally recognise the partnership of two adult persons regardless of gender; and for alternative options to be identified to enable children under the age of 18 to access hormone treatment, rather than requiring a Family Court Order.

The United States American Medical Association passed a resolution today finding that there is no “medically valid reason” for banning transgender personnel from military service.

The AMA also recommended that transgender personnel be afforded medical care “according to the same medical standards that apply to non-transgender personnel.”

Paula Neira, a former US Navy Lieutenant and transgender veteran said the AMA resolution acknowledges that the current exclusionary regulations are unsupported by modern medicine.

Group Captain Cate McGregor called for the respect and courtesy that she has received to be extended to other transgender members at a recent dinner hosted by the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).

The evening brought together prominent members of the Canberra LGBTI community, DEFGLIS, Australian Federal Police, University of New South Wales Canberra lecturers, senior Defence personnel and undergraduates to explore how to turn LGBTI inclusion in Defence from being something that is extraordinary to simply ordinary.

The dinner was one of many events held across Defence to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Bi-, Intersex and Trans-phobia and was organised by the ADFA LGBTI Network for undergraduates.

Defence personnel stimulated workplace conversation about LGBTI inclusion on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Personnel from RAAF Edinburgh's No. 87 Squadron and DEFGLIS attended an information session organised by DEFGLIS member Bonnie Doyle to mark the occasion.

At the event the members 87 Squadron spoke to the significance of the day and how society and the defence culture has changed since the 90s. Members spoke about how it wasn't a matter of 'don't ask don't tell,' but more of a 'no one asked and no one told' environment.
